Dr. Nel received a BChD at the University of Pretoria; thereafter a Higher Diploma in Denstistry at the University of the Witwatersrand; and finally a MChD (Prosthodontics) degree at the University of Pretoria. He is registered as a Prosthodontist and his fields of expertise and interest include occlusion; aesthetics dentistry and computerized dentistry.

Awards; achievements and acknowledgments of Dr. Nel include the following:

• The Van Riebeeck Gold Medal for the Best Student at the University of Pretoria.
• Diploma of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (USA).
• Diploma of the American Society of Osseointergration (USA).
• The Implant Science Education Medal (USA).
• Dr. Nel was elected as Counsellor of the International Society for Computerized Dentistry.
• He reicieved the Top Achiever Award from the University of Pretoria.
• He was appointed Professor/Head of the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Pretoria. Sixteen prothodontists recieved their MChD degrees under his guidance.
• He has more than 60 publications to his credit
• He delivered many lectures at congresses in South Africa and abroad.
• Dr. Nel served on the editorial staff of local as well as international Scientific Journals that include "Dental Update" and "The International Journal of Prosthodontics".
