Services and Treatments

Diagnostic:
An accurate diagnosis is essential for successfull treatment.
Comprehensive consultations is done utilizing x-rays and digital photography.
The occlusion is analyzed and an aesthetic evaluation is done. This includes the analyzing of the smile, the shape and color of the teeth as well as the relationship between the teeth and soft tissue.

Preventive Dentistry:
Regular professional prophylaxis is essential to prevent bad breath (halitosis) and infections in the gums. A chronic gum infection may lead to periodontitis – a disease known for bone and eventually tooth loss!

Regular prophylaxis and controlled fluoride treatment may reduce the incidence of tooth decay. Molars and premolars in adolescents are sealed with a fissure seal.

Tooth Whitening:
This s a fantastic safe and conservative way to treat discolored teeth – we do Brite Smile for a fast, easy and convenient way to look and feel fantastic! Different options are available – either a 2 hour power bleach in-office or a home bleach system. Other systems are also available on request.

Endodontics:

She qualified at the University of Pretoria in June 1986. She practiced dentistry in London in her own practice in Putney. Rita decided to return to the land of milk and honey in 1996 with a keen interest in especially endodontics.

Endodontics is technically a very difficult procedure. To enhance precision, all work is carried out using a Zeiss microscope. The purpose of the procedure is to clean and shape the canals removing debri and bacteria. Rotary nickel titanium files are used, the canals are irrigated and treated with O3 (ozone) to kill any remaining organisms and to promote healing. The canals are then sealed, ready to be restored.

Restorative Techniques:
Dentists worldwide are moving away from using heavy metals when restoring teeth – this is aesthetically unacceptable and may cause metal poisoning!

  1. Selective Grinding:
Small irregularities are corrected by selectively reshaping teeth.
  2. Composite:
Small restorations can be done using composite material. It is not as durable as porcelain, but less expensive.
  3. Porcelain Laminate Veneers:
Minimal tooth reduction is done and paperthin Veneers are bonded to teeth to improve the length, shape or color of a tooth.
  4. Porcelain Inlays and Overlays:
A Sirona Computer, Cerec III utilizing CAD-CAM technology (computer-aided-design and manufacturing) is used to manufacturing porcelain restorations. The cerec porcelain is manufactured in the Vita Factory in Switzerland and of superb quality.

This is a very conservative technique. The defective filling and decay is removed. A reflective powder layer prepares the tooth for imaging. An optical 3D camera is used to require an optical image. The restorations is designed on the computer. The milling unit mills the restorations making use of diamond coated burs. Polishing or glazing ensures a pleasant smooth natural feel. The physical properties of this porcelain is very close to that of tooth enamel. The outstanding adhesive bond between dentine and ceramic is a decisive factor for the high durability of the restoration. It not only looks like enamel but also wear at the same rate.
  5. Empress Crowns:
The IPS Empress material is a leucite – inforced glass ceramic. The coping is pressed and characteristic porcelain is fused to it. Empress crowns are characterized by optimal strength and translucency.
  6. CAD-CAM Zirconium Crowns:
Zirconium polycrystals has been developed and adopted for use in dentistry with CAD-CAM technology. The model is scanned, the information computerized, the coping designed and milled in the LAVA milling centre at the Brooklyn Dental Laboratory next door to the surgery.

In the case of long-span bridges, the design for the copings is e-mailed to Sweden to the NobelBiocare Milling Centre where it is milled.

After it is milled the Zirconium undergoes a process called transformation toughening – this increases fracture resistance. A strong esthetic porcelain is veneered to the Zirconium coping by our Dental Technician, Frits Gerber. The final characterizing regarding shape and shade is done in my surgery.
  7. Bruxism
Tooth Grinding or Clenching has a multi factorial origin namely - stress, systemic disease and local factors like an unbalanced occlusion or leaking restorations. This causes the rapid loss of tooth structure. As soon as dentine is exposed, tooth structure is destroyed much faster. Worn down short teeth makes a patient look much older.

Except for the damage to tooth structure bruxism also cause headaches, neck aches, tooth ache and damage to the temperomandibular joints. In bruxism patients, the lost tooth structure is replaced and a full coverage bite plate placed to be worn whenever the patient sleeps.
  8. Implantology:
Missing teeth can be replaced by implants. All surgical procedures are referred to highly trained specialist periodontists or oral surgeons.

Advanced implantology and occlusal rehabilitation cases is referred to Dr. Hannes Nel.
